Kangaroo on site

Dear Parents/Carers,

Just after 9am this morning a kangaroo was observed on the large oval. Staff were alerted to this and minimal foot traffic occurred after this time. By 9.30am the kangaroo had hopped away to a neighbouring property and we had called Statewide Wildlife Advisory Services (DEECA). As a precautionary measure, students were kept inside at recess but were able to go out to play at lunch time.

Students were kept inside for recess as a precautionary measure. Advice provided by DEECA included:

In the event the kangaroo returns over the coming days or weeks, the advice remains to ensure children and staff do not approach the kangaroo. A lone male resting is very common this time of year, he’s likely between mobs and may be nursing a bruised ego, potentially some minor injuries.

It’s important to refrain from attempts to ‘shoo’ the kangaroo away. This creates a human safety risk, as it could be perceived as a threat by the animal and prompt defensive behaviour. It’s also illegal to disturb or harass kangaroos under the Wildlife Act 1975 without prior authorisation to do so.

In addition, this afternoon, a brochure was provided which will be shared with the students tomorrow.

Kind regards,

Gab Verstraete (Principal)
